Leftover Lovers Pizza

When you're cooking for two, chances are you'll get to the end of the week and have a few leftover items - be it veggies, cheese, or proteins - that won't make it past the weekend. You could just throw them away, but if you're anything like me, you hate to waste! Well luckily I live with a pizza-holic who could eat the stuff for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday of the week. So I came up with Leftover Lovers pizza - an almost weekly ritual that helps me use up whatever's in my fridge!

You can start with a store bought crust or a homemade version. My personal favorite is a recipe from Bon Appetit. It's thin, crisp, and absolutely perfect. Here's how it's done ...

In a large bowl, combine 2 tsp sugar with 3/4 cup water and 1.5 tsp active dry yeast. Stir it up, it will look like this:

Let it sit around for about 5 minutes until it looks spongy. Something like this ...

Now stir in 1.5 Tbsp olive oil, 1 tsp salt, and 2 1/4 cups flour. Knead it up for about 5 minutes. You'll find it therapeutic ...

Now take the dough out and coat the bowl with a dab of olive oil. Add your dough ball back into the bowl, cover it with a towel, and leave it alone for about 1.5 hours. It should go from this:

Now you'll want to turn your oven to very hot (500 degrees) and put your pizza stone or pans in the oven. This is key because the hot pan will help crisp up the dough when you put it on. While the pans are warming, stretch your dough out with hand, a rolling pin, sheer will, whatever works! I like to make mine into two long flatbreads, but you can do two traditional circles or even squares. Here's mine:

Now toss that towel back on top of your dough, and let it rest for another 15 minutes while you drink a little pre-pizza beer and get your toppings out of the fridge and chopped up. After your crust rests, take the hot pans carefully out of the oven and put the crust on them. You'll hear them start to crisp up a bit on the bottoms. It's lovely!

Now you're ready to top it off. For these two pizzas I did:

Pizza #1 which was out of this world

1 cup Manchego cheese
About 1/3 link of crumbled chorizo
Around 10 large shrimp chopped up

Pizza #2 which was decent but paled in comparison to its oven-brethren

Smear of olive oil on the crust
About 6 blanched green onions
A couple of slices of shredded Prosciutto
1 cup grated Mozzarella
1/3 cup grated Parmesan

Now bake these in your 500 degree oven for 10 minutes, slice 'em up and enjoy! The beauty of these pizzas is you can really top them with whatever you like. I'll keep you updated on what combinations I successfully come up with in the future!

Last week Derek had a birthday.
I'm pretty darn happy this guy was born 26 years ago, so celebrations had to be made.

While Derek was out golfing (his favorite past time) I prepared the surprises ...

Like a yummy cake - I used this recipe.

And a delicious meal including a signature drink featuring two of Derek's favorite flavors - strawberry and basil - recipe here.

And balloons and other birthday decor that Arnold adored ...

until he popped one.

There was some music and dancing.

And of course candles to blow out.

Making a comeback

If you're here and you're reading this after my several-month hiatus, you are AMAZING! Although I've taken the last few months off from blogging myself, I haven't stopped reading all of your awesome blogs. It's been nice to enjoy the blogosphere without worrying about what I'm going to post, and my crazy busy life just got in the way of spending additional hours beyond my workday at my computer each night.

After reflecting on the time investment and what I enjoy most about blogging, I've decided to begin again, albeit quite casually, blogging on the fly when I have something I want to share or a memory I want to capture for my own benefit. Hopefully you enjoy reading along!

When I posted about this Chloe couch last week, my friend Kayla text me that she was considering the same piece! It's a small sofa world out there people, and while Derek and I have yet to commit to the Chloe, Kayla is ready to take the plunge with the beautiful couch in sleek granite.

Yesterday, we talked paint colors and agreed we both love the soft but modern combination of yellow and grey, so I thought I'd pull some images for inspiration! Which do you like best?

Cherry swirl cake

Awhile back, I picked up a cookbook called 101 Things to do with a Cake Mix at a thrift store for about cents. It's a cute little book and all the recipes are effortless - involving cake mix and just a few other ingredients. When I was craving something sweet the other day, I thought I'd whip up one of these simple recipes and was delighted with the result! It took almost no time to make and was just as quickly gobbled up.

Enjoy!

Cherry Swirl Cake
from 101 Things to do with a Cake Mix

Ingredients:
1 white cake mix
3 eggs
2 cans or 21 ounces cherry pie filling
Whipped cream or powdered sugar

Directions:
1. Prehat oven to 350 degrees
2. Mix cake mix and eggs together and stir in half of the cherry pie filling
3. Pour batter into a greased bundt cake pan and bake 40-50 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean
4. Invert hot cake onto a platter and dust with powdered sugar
5. Serve with reserved pie filling and whipped topping

Weekenders

The sun was out this weekend in full force and we made sure to soak up plenty of it! Friday we went to the drive-in movies, our favorite way to watch a new flick since we can bring as much candy as we want and a bottle of wine.

Saturday we drove up in the mountains to Julian, an old mining town that has retained much of it's historic charm. We even ate at an original drug store soda fountain! Yum!

And Sunday, I was majorly spoiled as Derek insisted on doing all our chores (vacuuming, dusting, laundry, etc), while I lounged in the sun with a book. He even managed to be a sneaky photographer in the process.

Have pure joy

During last weekend's stroll on the beach, Derek and I wandered onto the leash-free dog beach so I could drool openly over how much I want one of my own, and not even look out of place! And I must say, there is nothing more joyful than a dog at the beach - frolicking in the waves, chasing toys, and meeting new friends - it reminds me of a book called Dog Heaven I read as a child.

So this weekend, I hope you're as joyful as a dog at the beach! Here are some links I liked this week to help the happy factor.

Couch potato

When Derek and I moved in together, I left the limited furniture I had in NYC behind, shipped my small belongings, flew across the country with a couple of suitcases, and agreed to use Derek's acquired (mainly free stuff he got from friends who were moving/deploying) furniture as we slowly and frugally worked to acquire pieces of our own.

Thus far, we've been incredibly fortunate with some awesome Craigslists finds including a kitchen table, desk, and stereo cabinet, but the pieces I'm most eager to replace are our very oversized couch, loveseat, and chair which are not only too big for our space, but require annoying couch covers which slip, slide, and constantly look disheveled.

This past weekend, we started the hunt for a new couch and loveseat (we'll do a separate set of patterned chairs) and fell head-over-heels for the Chloe set from Macy's. As far as furniture costs go, it's pretty reasonable (will be about $1,200 with coupons and can be financed) but Derek and I aren't positive it's the right time to make the investment.

I've been on the hunt for a less expensive but similar alternative, but everything I see pales in comparison to this set. Do you have any tips on where to buy a stylish sofa? Seen anything like my Chole set out there? Please do let me know!

Marsala mushroom pizza

One of my favorite veggies out there are mushrooms - when cooked, mushrooms take on the flavor of whatever they are mixed with, making them delicious little morsels that can serve as a "meaty" substitute in a vegetarian meal.

So when I had some leftover Marsala wine from a chicken dinner, mushrooms were the clear ingredient to soak up some great Marsala taste. And thus this mushroom marsala pizza was born! Delicious, filling, and bursting with mushrooms, it was a great weeknight meal!

Mushroom Marsala Pizza

Ingredients:

One, 12 inch thin pizza crust (I created this mine from this recipe using half whole-wheat flour)

20 ounces mixed mushrooms (I used cremini, baby portobello, and portobello)
1 cup Marsala wine
3 TB butter
3 TB heavy cream
Pinch of fresh herbs (I used sage but thyme or rosemary would also work well)
1 cup Parmesan cheese
2 cups mozzarella cheese (you could use a variety of cheeses you have on hand: asiago, fontina, etc)

Steps:

Preheat oven to 475 degrees.

1. Heat a large pan over medium-high heat than add in the mushrooms - this will look too many mushrooms at first but they cook down.

2. Continue to cook and stir the mushrooms as they release their moisture (it will look like water is filling the pan) and stir to thoroughly coat them in their own juice.

3. When most of the liquid has boiled away, add a pinch of salt, butter, and fresh herbs. Cook for about 3-4 minutes or until nicely sauteed and browned.

4. Add Marsala wine to the pan and increase the heat to high. Boil until most of the Marsala has evaporated.

5. In the last minute, add in the cream and stir well until coated.

6. On your rolled-out pizza crust, pour out the mushrooms and any remaining sauce and spread around until evenly coated. Top with the cheese.

7. Bake either on a pizza stone or baking sheet for 10-12 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and brown. Bon appetit!

Ah weekend, I miss you so much already. Friday night Derek and I made a scandalous maneuver when after seeing an early (and disappointing) showing of The Adjustment Bureau, we decided to walk unabashedly into a showing of Rango that had just begun. It was a very daring and deceptive maneuver, but Rango was a much, much better movie and it gave us an excuse to eat more candy.

After such a sugar rush on Friday, Saturday morning we went for a bright and early hike, then got dressed and went down to Coronado Beach and the Silver Strand for a bike ride. We worked up such a sweat we decided we deserved some chips, salsa, and margaritas. I was particularly tickled pink when Derek's prickly pear margarita turned out to be the girliest looking beverage on the menu.

We finished our day off with a stroll along the beach, some shopping, and dinner at a wine bar. A perfect Saturday I must say!

Sunday was full of errands - particularly the hunt for a new place to live (we're out of this apartment at the end of May and are picking the perfect new neighborhood) and a sofa/loveseat living room set. If you have any ideas on where to get an affordable but stylish set please let me know! I think we've exhausted all our options.

I hate to make my cold weather friends sad, but I must confess it is predicted to be in the 70s and very sunny all weekend, and Derek and I intent to spend every moment outside. The weather we've been having lately has left me with a serious Vitamin D deficiency and I plan to cure myself all weekend long.

9/30 Who needs TV when you have customer service at Barnes & Noble?

Yesterday morning I awoke to a downed Internet and a repair guy who couldn't show up until "sometime between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and midnight, never," so I was forced to scramble over to the nearest Panera to mooch off their free wi-fi and gorge myself on pastries.

After several hours in my booth, I ran out of things to order, and the Panera staff ran out of patience with me stealing table space from their dining customers. So I picked up my computer, capitalized on free refills at the coffee carafe for the 20th time, and headed down the road to Barnes & Noble to see how long I could stay before the magazine section caught my wandering eye.

Turns out, I was not the only one turning the bookstore into my office, and the sole open seat I could find was a recliner set directly next to the customer service counter. And in this position, I discovered it wasn't the magazines that I had to worry about, the customers at the counter were a far better distraction.

Here's some highlights:

- Middle-aged man approaches counter looking for a book called Magnetics. Employee asks who it's by. Customer: "No one that I know of, I'm just hoping there is one."

- Man in construction gear looking for The Sourdough Cookbook. Looks like someone's aiming to please at the company bake sale.

- Mohawk man in search of The Ultimate Pregnancy Journal. What a sweetie, right? And please, oh please, give your baby a matching 'do. See here for why.

- Middle-aged woman looking for a book with a title I couldn't make out. Employee says they don't have it, but she can put it on order. Customer: "No thanks, my book group is meeting to discuss it at 6:00." Tsk tsk procrastinator.

Black cow cupcakes

Growing up, on special TV watching nights in our house, my mom, dad, sister and I would curl up in our pajamas on the couch, skip dinner, and instead have black cows (aka root beer floats) and popcorn. It was my very favorite thing - no vegetables, no table, and TV! How good does it get?!

So with the Oscars approaching last Sunday, I knew I wanted to serve up something special for a TV night-in, and to give my old favorite a little kick, I transformed black cows and popcorn into a cupcake! Complete with popcorn bucket!

They were delicious, fun, and the perfect mix of salty and sweet. Here's how I did it.

Black Cow Cupcakes
Adapted from Baked Perfection
Makes 24 cupcakes

Ingredients:

2 cups root beer
1 cup dark unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 large eggs

whipped cream or ice cream
popcorn (I used a sea salt variety)

1.Preheat the oven to 350F and line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners (this will prevent the moisture of the cake from leaking onto your "bucket")

2. In a small saucepan, heat the root beer, cocoa powder, and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted. Add the sugars and whisk until dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool.

3.In a large bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt together.

4. Whisk eggs into the cooled cocoa mixture until combined. Gently fold the flour mixture and cocoa mixture together. The batter will be slightly lumpy.

5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a fork inserted in the middle of a cake comes out clean.

6. Once the cupcakes are cool, wrap each in a popcorn "bucket."*

7. Add a dollop of ice cream or whipped cream to the top of each cake, inside the bucket.

8. Sprinkle popcorn on top so it looks like the whole bucket is full and enjoy!

* I created my buckets in inDesign, printed them, then used a scalloped edge scissor to cut them out. I then wrapped each cake in one and secured it at the back with tape so it could be easily unwrapped and eaten. Let me know if you would like this and I'll send you the PDF!

8/30 aka Cowls are perfect for hiding candy

After I saw this post on The Daybook, I crunched some numbers and realized I could save approximately 89.322 minutes per week if I switched to a smaller purse, thus avoiding the time spent rooting around in the depths of my suitcase-sized giant to find a pen or some change.

Since that revelation, I've switched to a teeny-tiny purse and in my new spare time have traced my family lineage back 600 years, done 100 New York Times' Sunday crossword puzzles, and broken the world record for longest hula-hoop.

But then on Friday night, Derek and I went to the movies, and I was reminded why I used to carry that big ol' purse - to sneak candy in to theaters of course! Yes, you heard me right, I refuse to pay $5 for a box of Red Vines when they are $1 at Walgreens. So as I pondered my situation, I looked from my tiny purse, to my candy, to my cowl, and thought, hmm ... could my knit neck warmer not only snuggle but smuggle?

Then I decided, good idea, but no, and did what any normal gal would do, put my little purse, inside my old big purse, along with all the candy I could manage.

Weekenders

It was a very hairy weekend at the Burke-Engler house. For quite some time now, I've been due for a haircut ... a process I never enjoy. Every time it's time for a snip, I hem and haw over what route to go. Should I cut it all off? Just take care of the dead ends? Layer it or go for something blunt? I Google pictures of every possible cut, but inevitably I go with something pretty much the same as before. In fact, the most drastic thing I've done to my hair in the past ten or so years, is let it go back from platinum blonde to my natural darker color. Well that and then this:

Anyways, my very first plan for this weekend's hair appointment was to go for the same-old-same-old. Then I saw this photo of Heidi Klum, and in a fit of bravery, printed it out and put it in my purse. Haunted by the memories of sparkly hair clips holding back my awkward-length bangs when I grew them out in the fifth grade, I was unsure if I would actually ever pull it out.

.But with my man cheering me on from the sidelines while he read his In Touch Weekly, I felt the courage and I went for it. And voila! Here is the result:

Terry, you'll be glad to know your son still listens to your advice. Though I must say, while I spent Oscars' night admiring the dresses, Derek spent Oscar night nostalgically admiring the facial hair.

Happy Friday my friends! As you can see, I'm still in the first third of my outfit postings, while my compadres in this process are in their final leg. If there was any denying that my work-from-home job keeps me in thoroughly un-internet-worthy clothes, you better believe it now. Luckily I have a boyfriend who prefers the no-makeup ponytail me, and when I do get gussied up, it makes it all the more fun.

And now, the weekend is here, and I'm finally going to be home, dressed, and have the time to snap some shots. So except more to come! I also have some fun recipes and projects coming next week so stay tuned.

Well if it says anything about my Vegas vacation, it's almost the next weekend, and I'm just getting around to posting this last weekend. It was a whirlwind to say the least.

Betcha thought I became a blackjack professional and stayed in Vegas, didn't ya? Well, I thought about it, but in the end, I thought the buffets would get to be too much for my waist line. After spending the weekend in D.C., I was feeling ultra patriotic - especially so when I came home from 30 degree weather to sunny and 80 San Diego, ah how I love travelling from sea to shining sea.

So I donned my most red, white, and blue 30 for 30 duds and went national anthem caroling 'round the neighborhood. Or at least I thought about it. I was too nervous after Christina's disaster a few weeks back.

P.S. Please excuse the close-up of my hobbit feet. If you ever were a ballet dancer in pointe shoes, you understand.

Little bits of love

Did you have a happy Valentine's Day? Derek and I celebrated pretty low-key since I was just getting back from a trip. I received some lovely flowers, a box of chocolate, and pretty hair accessories from Claire's which are awesome and equally hilarious when I picture Derek waiting in line there behind a bunch of teeny-boppers.

I took a cue from these stickers and put little notes in all the places I know Derek visits everyday. He's very routined. Here are a few:

Standard lunch is a peanut butter sandwhich ...

And some Internet time to check ESPN.com.

The man always gets some ice for his water bottle.

And makes sure to hit a few practice putts (in the house).

Then we cooked a yummy pasta dinner with Pinor Noir ...

And finished off the night with my surprise St. Louis gooey butter cake - complete with heart shaped powdered sugar.

I spent the weekend totally inspired and in awe in Washington D.C. where I toured some of the monuments that represent the heroism of our country's history and spent time with 11,000 living heroes who are working to end the educational inequity that exists between children in low-income and high-income communities today.

As a DIY and design lover, it's sometimes rather difficult to me feel satisfied living in an apartment. I can't paint the walls, can't change out the cabinets, can't update the bathroom hardware, and can't otherwise make any large, destructive moves that will significantly alter the place without incurring a large fine when we move out.

So I try to find other ways to make small changes in the apartment that make it feel like home, without damaging the "goods."

Since the apartment came with cheap-o-la towel bars, similar to those you find in a motel, one update we made was to swap it out for these two "D" and "T" hooks I found at Micheals in the $1 section. I cut out some scrapbook paper and Modge Podged it on, and Derek removed the old towel bar and put these up to be replaced before we move out. For $2, it's a great update that makes our home feel a little more personalized.

A few weeks ago, Derek and I took a bike ride around one of our favorite places in San Diego - Coronado. If you've never been to our little corner of the world, Coronado is a gorgeous island right off the city of San Diego with a stunning beach, famous resort, and the home of a large Navy SEAL base.

But what I love best about Coronado are the houses -- breath-taking beach mansions at every turn. On our latest trip a snatched a photo at this beauty, and I have to say I'm ready to move in.

Between my middle school and adult years, I experienced minimal movement in the growth department and thus found minimal motivation to stop shopping in the children's section. Don't worry, don't worry. You won't ever catch me in a crop top or school girl skirt. This isn't a Britney Spears' video. But when items like flip flops and flats look just about the same in a girl's style as they do in a woman's, and the price is so much better, you can bet your bottom dollar you'll find me in the former section at Old Navy, pretending to be shopping for my non-existent niece.

This particular outfit, however, has a few choice item from my new favorite department - the boys'. Sure, I could have splurged on a pair of Sperry boat shoes to get my nautical fix, but why bother when I thrifted this boy's pair, brand new for $4. And the belt? Also thrifted. And I'm guessing from the stamps it once belonged to someone who never outgrew his Thomas the Tank Engine phase. But for 99 cents? I'm all aboard.

After photo shoot numero uno, I thought I was feeling just a wee bit better about outfit posing and was excited to show off my mad skills. Derek and I located this ~~scenic~~ barren little spot in our apartment complex and went to work.

Definitely still in need some practice but I do have excuses. The squinty eyes look and the gaze upward? Those are a result of two things. 1. A too bright sun and 2. Our handy complex maintenance man, Lefty, standing behind Derek and saying over and over again, "Mighty fine day for some picture taking ... miiiighty fine."

As a result of these distractions, you get a nice close-up of my shoes for outfit two and an extra shoot to boost! Outfit number three below.

Whoop it up

One of the drawbacks of working from home is that you never leave the "office" and since I use the same computer for work and non-work activities, I usually shut down my office inbox right when my day ends. Lately, however, my pesky little computer has decided I'm not working long enough, and continues to pop-up Outlook inbox alerts, even when my inbox is shut-down.

After all the pretty images I search for on you, Computer? This is the thanks I get?

Anyways, one of these out-of-place alerts decided to interrupt me with some really non-fun emails last night as I used him to copy the marinade on this recipe. Guess he didn't feel like chicken tonight.

So what did I do? A little of this you ask...?

No, no. I'm a peace-keeping individual. Instead, I just poured myself a tall glass of wine and proceeded to make and eat myself some whoopie pies. And Computer? He went to bed hungry. Boo-ya!

Coconut Cream Whoopie Pies

Adapted from Dolcetto Confections
Makes about a baker's dozen

Ingredients:
Whoopie Pies:
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tablespoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon table salt
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated
1 egg
1 cup low-fat buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Filling:
I was rushed so I confess to using a can of vanilla cake frosting (holds crossed fingers in front of self). Don't hate me. But you could use any basic frosting recipe.

Topping:
1/3 cup coconut

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 400°F and grease two baking sheets.
2. Mix together dry ingredients and set aside.
3. In a separate bowl, beat butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla and beat until combined. Gradually add flour mixture and beat on low speed until combined.
4. Drop generous amounts of batter (a very overfilled spoon will do) onto prepared baking sheets, 1-2 inches apart or use a whoopie pie pan.
5. Bake about 8 minutes or until risen and springy.
6. Remove from baking sheets and let cool.
7. Meanwhile, heat a small pan over medium heat and toss in coconut. Toast for about 5 minutes, tossing continuously until slightly browned on the edges.
8. When pies are cooled, divide into sets of two and generously frost one pie and add a pinch of toasted coconut.
9. Top the pie with its other half and squeeze gently so the frosting rims the edges.
10. Roll the pie edges in the toasted coconut until covered.
11. Serve with a glass of white wine, cozied up on your couch.

Hello, hello!

I know I promised just one post with all my 30 for 30 outfits compiled each week, but I can't lie, I've been getting really excited checking out some of the other remixers' blogs, and wanted to make sure to get up outfit number one in case anyone stops by! Then I swear I'm back to the old plan.

So here's pretty much how the first photoshoot went:

Me (in my head): OK, pose, pose, over the shoulder, sexy smile, leg pop, skinny arm. You're lookin' good girl!

Derek (after about 10 seconds): Why don't you stop and take a look at what we've got?

Me (realizing what Derek already knows: I look constipated and/or insane in every photo): Accck! What am I doing wrong?

Derek: Why don't you come over by the door instead, turn to the side, give a little bit of a smile like this (demonstrates several poses which I mimic. New pictures turn out great).

So the moral of the story here is, my boyfriend is a better model than I am. Great. Looks like I have an ANTM marathon in my future.

And to make sure you get a good laugh with your morning cup of coffee, here's a sample of what my pictures looked like without ~~Tyra~~ Derek's direction.

A tray a day ...

After loving the results of this thrift store tray makeover, I've had my eye out for more abandoned trays to style-up, so I was quite excited when I stumbled upon this detailed tray at the thrift store for $3.

It looked pretty good as it was, but I thought it could use a little pop to make it fit well in our colorful apartment. I knew I wanted to place either fabric or paper on the bottom of the tray, so I had my eye out for a piece of glass that was the right size to place on the bottom. I came across this t-shirt frame at Micheals, on sale for $5, and the glass was a perfect size for my tray.

I discarded the rest of the frame, sprayed the tray with a bright green, used hot glue to place this scrapbook paper cut out (.19 cents) on the bottom, and placed four small dots of hot glue on the glass to hold it down.

And here is the result! I'm in love.

On the nightstand, it's the perfect place to hold my book and discarded jewelry. But it's permanent home will soon be as a little wine/liquor bar on top of the antique stereo console Derek and I are refinishing. Stay tuned for that!

In the meantime I'm thinking of opening an Etsy store dedicated to my love of trays. Trimmed & Tray-lored anyone?

30 for 30, before I'm 30?

My first attempt at fashion blog posing. Can't keep a straight face. Looks like someone needs some practice.

Over the weekend, inspired by some of my favorite fashion bloggers, I decided to participate in Kendi Everyday's 30 for 30 challenge. If you haven't heard of it yet, you choose 30 items from your closet (accessories not included) that are the only things you can wear for the next 30 days, and share pictures of your ensembles on your blog.

The remixing of clothes doesn't scare me so much, but I can tell you that I'm rather terrified to post pictures of myself for all to view. That may sound silly since I often post weekend or vacation pictures, but, I'm feeling terribly self-conscious about my ability to pose for the camera as cutely as girls like Emily and Sydney do.

So while my outfits may not be high fashion, and my poses rather unmodelesque, I do hope that the project will inspire me to get creative with my closet, and also provide you with some budget shopping tips and perhaps a good laugh at some awkward pictures of yours truly.

And since this blog is meant to be lifestyle focused, I won't detour from my regular recipe, project, and DIY postings. I also confess, that because I work from home, I sometimes spend the entire day in sweats, and I won't include those days in this project. With these two caveats in mind, you can expect one weekly fashion-related post that will include all my remixes from that week and a hope that I find enough days to get dressed up that I finish my 30 for 30 before I'm 30, six years from now.

Weekenders

Welcome back from the weekend friends! Derek and I had a fabulous time this weekend attending the PGA tour event at nearby Torrey Pines. I'm not much into golf myself, but Derek was like a kid waiting for Christmas ever since we got the tickets. Excited as I was initially not, I actually had a fabulous time! The competition, crowd, sun, and a few beers turned me into quite the golf fan. I even got a thumbs-up from this guy.

Unfortunately, cameras were not allowed at the event, and thus I have zero golf pictures to post. Instead, I thought I 'd share the above pictures taken a few months ago when Derek took me beach horseback riding for my birthday! Random, I know, but I was reminiscing in my Picasa albums today and thought why not?

Confession: collections

When I was about 8-years-old, I wanted a dog, bad. My parents wouldn't let us get one, so I found ways to substitute - I read books about dogs, made homemade treats for my friends' dogs, and finally, I collected dog figurines - about five shelves full to be exact. I may have been on my way to becoming a candidate for this show.

When I was 11, I finally got a real dog. And as most kids do with their collections, I grew bored of my dog statue menagerie and it soon moved from a prominent spot in my bedroom to a box in my parents' attic.

Since then, the only thing I've collected are vintage aprons, of which I have about 10, most of which were sent to me by friends and family who know I love these frilly things.

I'm confessing my collection because I want to know, what do you collect? Did you have any strange collections when you were a youngster? Traumatized by any porcelain doll collections of your grandmothers'?

I also wanted to share my thoughts on five things that are FREE and perfectly non-hoarderish to collect:

1. Restaurant matchbooks - free, fabulous little souvenirs to remind you of the great places you've eaten. Plus, when placed in a bowl they provide a classy air freshener for your bathroom. We keep ours in this seashell on our bathroom counter.

2. Seashells - bringing a little ocean into your house always brightens things up and seashells can also be used in so many cute ways! Like as a hurricane filler here, also in our bathroom.

3. Memories - I took a class in college called Life Histories/Narratives for which I had to write a biography about my mom. Though I'd already heard plenty of stories about her, it was really special to chat about her life uninterrupted. Take time to sit down with grandparents and other older family members and record their stories from small to big, down on paper or with a video camera. Years from now, the collection of those memories will be something generations of your family can enjoy.

4. Compliments - I can't say enough about how a compliment can brighten someone's day. Be liberal in your giving of compliments and hang on to your favorites! You can write down compliments that really impact you in a journal or, like me, save a email folder for "Yays!" I have one in my work and one in my personal account. I stash nice emails there to remind myself how good things can be when I'm having a bad day.

5. Coupons - OK, I don't mean you should go to the extreme of this other show, but clipping those totally free coupons and collecting them someplace non-crazy like this cute antique coupon box that I use can save you big bucks. You know, so you can collect all those things that aren't totally free.

Smell the roses

I've had a spare grapevine wreath hanging out in my storage closet for a couple of months with no inspiration of what to do with it. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw this DIY wreath on Linley's lovely blog Dwelling & Telling.

Linley's version required 25 sheets of felt, but my local Michael's only had five sheets in the color I wanted to use, so I improvised! To create my roses I used the same method as on this project. I then clustered them off-center and added a pretty green ribbon.

I love the outcome! The perfect mix of wintery branches and light blooms for this time of year.

Weekenders

After being out of town for a few weekends in a row, Derek and I were excited to have a relaxing weekend at home - just the two of us.

Friday night we took it easy with a yummy sushi dinner out and some Netflix back at home. On Saturday, we headed to nearby Del Mar for an antiques fair! It was a lovely day outside, perfect for a Jeep drive.

To get in the thrifty-antique spirit I donned this floaty Target dress ($5) and my vintage Frye cowboy boots - thrifted for $8! Steal of the century.

Antiques fairs are the perfect place to accessorize! Check out these baubles! And that dress! To die for - but $500!

These folks got into their outfits as well. Meet Captain F-Bomb and some of his friends. They dress in "Steam Boat Punk" - imagine the Victorian age and a sci-fi movie combined.

I love the unique people and the unique finds at antique fairs. I could imagine this "gum parker" being cute in a bubble gum loving tween's room and this Jolly Roger boat would be a lovely surprise for a little guy. And the nut machine? Well that's just fun for everyone.

I think Derek was a little overwhelmed by it all, but he had a good time checking out some of the antique watches and listening in on a discussion about fishing lures. Maybe some of this antique shaving cream would've done him well. Could this stuff still be good?

After the antique fair we made our way home and had steak with this amazing topping. Then we headed to the drive-in theater to see The Green Hornet. The movie was just OK by itself but curling up in the back of the Jeep in our sweats with wine and candy made it a real winner.

Sunday morning I set off the fire alarm (oops!) while making beignets from mix Derek's mom sent us straight from The Big Easy! Beignets are delicious, especially paired with French coffee from New Orleans as well. Thanks Chris!

The rest of the day we relaxed, watched football, and got ready to get back to the grind!

Tips: Pancetta is a bit pricey so plan additional meals to use it up!

Wednesday: Easy Grilled Salmon (teriyaki marinade) from Simply Recipes
Rating: 6! Broke the charts!
Difficulty: 1 - couldn't be easier -- especially when your boyfriend does the cooking
Sides: This roasted cauliflower, salad, and homemade bread
Tips: Derek thought this was beyond perfection, but I found it a bit salty. I might go for low-sodium soy sauce next time.

Thursday: Ginger, Coriander, and Orange Glazed Chicken from Steamy Kitchen
Rating: 3 - I thought the flavor of this dish didn't quite match the time/effort put in
Difficulty: 2
Sides: Brown rice and this asparagus recipe
Tips: I used chicken breasts instead of thighs since we were having guests and not everyone loves bone-in. Perhaps the thighs with skin would have held the flavor better.

I'm sew happy

Before I moved to San Diego I was on a Craigslist hunting spree. One day, I stumbled upon an item I wasn't even looking for ... an antique, working sewing machine in a wood cabinet. I was in love! Not only could it be used as a functional table, but I could learn how to sew.

It was perfect but at $100, a little out of the range I was looking to spend on something I didn't technically need. The posting said the owner was moving that day so I took a chance and offered less to take it off her hands in time for her move. We chatted for awhile and I soon discovered she was the nicest Craigslist seller ever! She gave me the table for $50, not because she was moving, but because she'd had it since the eighth grade and wanted to make sure it got a good home!

Well I haven't learned to sew yet but I have given it a good place to live! It was a little worn down so Derek and I gave it a fresh coat of pretty orange paint and sprayed the handle white.

As usual, please ignore ugly wall color - we can't paint this apartment! Ugh!

The seller tossed in a pretty wooden box of sewing accessories which sits on the top along with a piece of wood printed with "New York" that my parents found at a flea market and an Empire State Building thermometer my Dad got in NYC when he was just 17!

We added a globe we found at a thrift store for just $12 to round off the top. For some inexpensive but meaningful art, I framed a photograph of Derek and some of his buddies in the Air Force. I also found this intro page to an article in a 1940's issue of Cosmopolitan I picked up at an antique fair. It's entitled "The Veteran Goes To College" perfect for my studious man of service!

Weekenders

My weekend recap is coming a day late this week since my weekend didn't even technically end until bedtime on Monday! I had such a wonderful time, however, that I'm excited to share some clips!

Sunday we drove up to Pasadena to visit our friends Matt and Krista and Monday we continued our journey on to Santa Monica to meet up with my cousins Sarah, Tyler, Will, and Tyler's girlfriend, Melissa. We did lots of talking, shopping, strolling, and general frolicking in the sunny and 80 degree January weather.

Here are a few of the highlights.

Take note - hairdos do not last long when your boyfriend drives a Jeep. Double note - boyfriend's Jeep needs a wash.

Coming out of the closet

I have a confession to make: I am a clothes-a-holic.

Although you wouldn't know it from home office uniform of sweats, I have a closet brimming with clothes. Not expensive clothes mind you, because in addition with my love of clothes, I have a love of bargain hunting (thanks Mom). Put me to work in a sale room or at a Marshall's or T.J. Maxx and I'll come out with more cute tops, pants, and dresses than you can shake your first at. But because bargain hunting means I can get more bang for my buck, I often end up with more clothes than I need, and even some items that attracted my eye initially, but end up sadly abandoned in my closet as my favorites get to tool around town.

Since we're off to a new year, I decided to put this bad habit to an end ... at least while I'm working from home and cute work outfits are rendered entirely unnecessary. To get going on this goal, I developed a plan that I began to carry out this weekend. Here it is:

First, I cleaned out my closet of anything I haven't worn in over a year and anything that's unrepairable (I have a habit of keeping my favorite things even when they're holey and I don't wear them).

Then, I took all the empty hangers and tucked them away, out of view. My rule now is, that I can't put any more hangers up - meaning if something new is coming in, something old has to go out. This way, each time I'm tempted to buy something, I have to weigh it against the other items in my closet -- Is it really something I need? Do I like it enough to get rid of something else? If the answer is yes, I must donate to Goodwill one piece of clothing to open up a hanger for the new item (same rule goes for folded items though it's more fun with the hangers - like musical chairs).

I'm so excited and already got started by getting rid of a preteen-looking cropped black blazer that's been in my closet for years, and replacing it with a grown-up lacy (yet also cropped) black Lauren Conrad (yes I love it) jacket I found on sale at Kohl's for a very bargain-licous $14.

Curtain up!

I love the warmth and practicality that curtains bring to a room, but I never can a set I love for a reasonable price! So you can imagine my delight when I came across a no-sew tutorial for curtains on Young House Love. I had to try it!

A local high-end fabric stores was going out of business so I was able to find five yards of gorgeous fabric for just about $30.

First, I measured the height of the windows and added about two inches to account for seems.

Then, I cut the fabric into two panels according to that length.

With some cheap hem tape (I used two rolls) I hemmed each side just using an iron.

While I was doing that, Derek put up our new curtain rod, then attached clip-on curtain rings to the newly "hemmed" panels.

Finally, curtain up! Applause!

1. I don't have a sweet tooth - I have an entire sweet mouth! I could eat sugar all day long.

2. Scratch my head and I'm putty in your hands. Perhaps that's why I'm constantly getting rubbed by this guy.

3. When I lived in NYC I loved getting dressed-up for work everyday. Now that I'm working from home, I confess to spending most of my 9-5 hours in my sweatpants. This is why you likely won't see any outfit posts on here anytime soon!

4. I collect vintage aprons! I find them at antique stores and thrift shops and I love how sweet and quaint they are.

5. I've lived in six different states! I enjoy moving and think it's fun to explore a new city, though I'm sure one-day I'll be ready to settle down.

6. Derek and I have technically only been dating since April '10, though I met him when I was only 17! We remained best friends and talked every day over the past several years, though him being in the Air Force and me at college made it hard to date. Now we're both settled in and so happy we can make it "official."

7. I love to read! When I was a kid I used to enter summer contests to see how many books I could read over the summer. I can easily finish a good novel in 2-3 days. I'd love recommendations!

The keys to Keystone

Whew! I'm finally caught up on life after an incredible long weekend in Keystone, Colorado, and while I'm always happy to be home in my own bed, I confess my heart is slightly achy every time I think about those breathtaking mountains and nights spent staring up at millions of stars in the hot tub.

Our friends Jess and Darren taught Derek and I how to snowboard and it was a blast! We're a little sore and bruised but the adrenaline rush of free-falling from 11,000 feet is unlike anything else! The term of the rest of the weekend was "swanky" since it was spent with a lot of wine, board games, steam showers, hottubbing, and delicious food in Jess's family's amazing and welcoming Keystone home.

I was too nervous to bring my camera to the top of the mountain but here are some shots of other weekend highlights.

Oh happy tray

While hunting for ugly Christmas sweaters for this event, I happened across this sad, neglected tray and couldn't help but see the potential in it, especially for just $1. Derek battled against me bringing home yet another piece of orphaned home decor, but I finally won him over.

And once he gave it a quick spray of white paint, I think he felt a little more welcoming toward it ...

Even more so when I covered the bottom with some green burlap ...

And then finished off the rough edges with jute twine ...

He even volunteered his stronger/steadier hand to cut out the stencil I printed out ...

And I knew he was officially in love when he took the lead in spraying the stencil on in black.

But in the end we sent the "E" for "Engler" tray, off to a better home, my parents', for Christmas.

Cherry walnut salad

While we were on vacation, we ate out our lunches way more frequently than we do at home and ended up at Panera (or St. Louis Bread Company as called in STL) quite a few times. I've loved Panera since high school but was so pleased with their new Harvest Chicken Salad - I had to try my own version at home! Not only did I get to try out two of my Christmas gifts (a Food Network food processor and Williams Sonoma vinaigrette shaker), it turned out so yummy, I think I'm going to try to reinvent a few more of my dining-out faves!

I hope you try it and love it as much as me!

Cherry walnut salad (Panera's Harvest Chicken)
Ingredients:
I made for two, but you can totally adjust the below by taste or number of eaters
- Mixed greens or other lettuce
- Pear (1)
- Handful of dried cherries
- Toasted walnuts - about 1/2 cup
- Crumbled blue cheese - about 1/2 cup
- Grilled chicken breast (1)

1. Toss ingredients together and serve with the vinaigrette below.

Cherry Vinaigrette:
From Derek's mom, Chris. Makes one cup - more than enough for a salad for two.

-1/3 cup dried cherries
- 1/4 cup hot water
- 1 cloves garlic
- 1/8 cup balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
- 1/2 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper

1. Soak cherries in hot water for 15 minutes; pour cherries and liquid into blender or food processor. Add garlic, vinegar and half of olive oil. Process until garlic is finely chopped.
2. Add mustard, salt and pepper, blending after each addition.
3. With blender running, add remaining olive oil in a steady stream.
4. Serve with salad and save the rest in an airtight container for only a couple of days.

Trimmed & Taylored presents the letter B

I've been crazy in love with the yarn wreaths all you crafties have been churning out like the beauties spotted on Take Heart here. I originally planned on making one for Derek's parents for Christmas, but in a short burst of over-achiever-ness at JoAnn's decided to attempt a yarn "B' for their last name.

I'm super happy with the result and it looks quite cute hanging in their house. Check out the how-to and the pics below and let me know what you think!

Supplies:
- Paper mache letter
- Yarn (I used one whole spool)
- Felt in your choice of colors (I used 4 - 5 sheets)
- Cardboard
- Glue gun
- Staple gun

Instructions:

1. Tie off a bit of ribbon at the back of your letter - where you start will depend on your letter - and then begin to wrap. Based on the shape of your letter, there will be various areas where you can't wrap the yarn. I used a bit of glue in some areas to help guide the yarn where it needed to be and left the other areas to be later covered with felt flowers.

2. Begin making your felt flowers. Cut a circle of felt with uneven edges then begin cutting the circle into a spiral. You should end with a large line of felt. Make various size circles to change your flower size.

3. Beginning at the end of your spiral, start to roll the felt tightly - forming a little rose! I also cut little leaves out of green felt.

4. Begin placing the roses around your letter, strategically placing them to cover any bare spots.
5. Trace your letter loosely onto a piece of cardboard (I used a pizza box) so that it will fit behind the letter but not poke out of the sides. Then use the cardboard to trace the same shape onto a sheet of felt. Glue the felt and the cardboard together and staple to the back of the letter to cover any back bare spaces.

6. I then attached a little loop of ribbon to the back for hanging, though you can also use a picture holder.

Voila! The letter B!

After a few days of ice skating, bowling, a fancy holiday show, great food, and lots of laughs in St. Louis with Derek's Mom, Dad and sister, it was tough to depart! We had such a great time and feel so lucky to have had two wonderful families to visit over the holidays. Some other highlights from our time at the Burke house ...

The yummiest frozen mojitos in the most festive colors (recipe below).

Blended Golden Mojitos
Makes 4 mojitos

Ingredients:
- sugar for coating
- 1 lime wedge
- 1 cup gold rum
- 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/3 cup sugar or light agave nectar
- 4 to 5 cups ice
- 12 fresh mint leaves plus 4 mint sprigs for garnish

Directions:
1. Place enough sugar on a small plate to reach 1/4 inch.
2. Run lime wedge across rims of martini glasses to moisten and dip into sugar.
3. Blend rum, lime, and 1/3 cup sugar until sugar dissolves.
4. Add 4 cups of ice and lend until slushy (add the last cup if desired).
5. Add mint and blend until small green flakes appear.
6. Pour into glasses and garnish with mint.

Back to the future - 2010/2011

I can't believe it's the first Monday in 2011 already! The past year and the past week of vacation time has flown so quickly by that I wanted to recapture a few of 2010's highlights as well as note down some of my goals for 2011 so you all can help hold me accountable!

The best of 2010:

- Moving to California and in with Derek was a huge decision that felt as easy as breathing. The heart knows what's best and I'm the happiest I've ever been!

- Living in NYC with my best gal pals and visiting wonderful friends and family in Boston, Pittsburgh, Florida, St. Louis, Minneapolis and Houston.

- Derek ending his time in the military after four years and two deployments. And now going back to school! I'm so proud of him and so glad he's safe and here with me to stay. All my thoughts to those out there with friends and family overseas!

- A half cross-country road trip from St. Louis to San Diego and seeing the Grand Canyon.

- Derek's first year at my Thanksgiving and our mutual first year of two family Christmases - Derek's and my own. It was so much fun to hang out with both - double the cheer!

- A promotion at work! Loving my new day job and the fact that I've started back up at my nighttime hobby -this blog!

- Dying my hair back to it's natural light brown after 10 (yes I'm only 24) years of highlighting to blonde. I love it!

Goals for 2011:

- Learn to use more than just the "shoot" button on my new Canon! Luckily my guy bought me a photography book for Christmas!

- Work up the strength and endurance to run all the way up Cowles Mountain - a feat I attempt with Derek every weekend but always end up walking and meeting him up at the top.

- Learn to use my new sewing machine! I'd love to have sewn something I can wear by the year's end.

- Be better about being in touch. I have friends and family all across the country - I want to make sure I spend more time on the phone and via snail mail keeping in touch, instead of just seeing what's going on via Facebook.

- Thoroughly explore San Diego. We may not be in "America's Finest City" much longer after Derek graduates in 2012, so I'd like to be sure I gave it the full once-over.

- Make more recipes of my own invention. I'm an expert at following recipes and I've come up with a few of my own, but I'd love to get more creative with my imagination.

- Do more for the people I love and those I've never met - a smile on the street, surprise homemade gift in the mail, a good listening ear, time spent volunteering - small minutes of action can add up big time for what you do for the world.

Gift writing

Now that the gifts are unwrapped, I can finally share some of my favorite DIY holiday gift creations. After my Mom saw this post about the kitchen chalkboard Derek and I created, she was eager to have a chalkboard of her own.

I kept my eyes open at the thriftstore until I came across just the right piece to turn into a chalkboard and when I saw this plate with some questionable ribbon on it for $1 I knew I had it.

We took the ribbon out, sprayed the plate with chalkboad paint (four coats!) and picked out some new ribbon combined with jute twine.

I was so pleased with the result and my Mom loved it and hung it up right away with a message to welcome guests to our Christmas Eve open house.

Eggnog cheesecake bars

I had some leftover eggnog after this yummy recipe, and with just one day to go until Derek and I headed out of town, I thought it would be good to use it up while making something yummy to bring my family for the holidays.

I couldn't find any eggnog recipes that were really striking my fancy, so I decided to invent my own! Hence, eggnog cheesecake bars were born, adapted from this recipe for pumpkin bars.

These turned out very yummy and rich! Let me know if you try them out.

Eggnog cheesecake bars

Base/Topping:
1 package Snickerdoodle cookie mix (I used Krustaez)
1 cup walnuts
1/2 cup cold butter - sliced

Filling:
1/2 cup eggnog
2 (8 oz) packages cream cheese
1 cup sugar
1/3 cup flour
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice (or cinnamon would work)
1.5 tsp rum extract
2 TB whipping cream
2 eggs

Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine the snickerdoodle mix (and cinnamon sugar if it came with it) and walnuts.
2. A few slices at a time, add in the butter, mixing into a crumbly, sticky mix either with your (very clean!) hands or a food processor.
3. Set aside one cup of the mixture, and press the remaining base into the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch brownie pan.
4. Bake for 10 minutes then let cool for at least 10 minutes.
5. While the base is baking, beat the cream cheese and sugar together until smooth.
6. Add in all the other ingredients and beat until combined.
7. Pour the filling on top of the base and smooth out.
8. Top with the remaining cup of the base.
9. Bake for 40 - 45 minutes or until top is light brown.
10. Chill/harden for at least 2 hours in the fridge.
11. Dive-in!

One of the best parts of Christmas is seeing all the beautifully wrapped gifts under the tree and speculating about what could be inside. But with all the fancy bags, wraps, and ribbons out there, it would be easy to spend just as much for the trimmings, as you do for the actual gift.

That's why I love craft paper. For about $3, you get a huge roll that can last you through several Christmases. For a few more dollars, you can pick up some fancy ribbon (I used a coupon at Michael's so these nice rolls were about $2 each) and then add some extra accouterments. I save buttons, stickers, bits of ribbon and other crafty knick-nacks I come across throughout the year, and end up with a huge bag of treats to use in my wrapping. This year, I also incorporated some jute twine from a never-ending $2.50 roll I bought for this project and a cute wine cork on one gift to hint at what's inside ...

The other great thing about craft paper? It's infinitely adaptable. Change out the ribbon color, sticker theme, etc., and you don't have to buy new wrapping for birthdays, Valentine's Day, anything!

This weekend, Derek and I were on the hunt for ugly Christmas sweaters for a party we'll be going to, and hit up several area thrift stores trying to track down some tinsel, holly, pom-pom covered gems.

In the midst of this search, we came across several little trinkets that, unlike a holiday sweater, had the potential to be rescued, rehabilitated, and turned into some adorable pieces for our home. A few of these pieces became Christmas gifts, so stay tuned to see those makeovers after they're unwrapped next week, but for now I wanted to share this sweet little California brown bear we found for $4.

At the same thrift store we found this guy, we picked up a 99 cent glass votive holder. We brought them both home and gave the bear a few coats of white spray paint.

A teeny bit of hot glue and one pine-tree scented candle later - we have an adorable little candle holder perfect for our Cali home and this little side table that was looking a bit BEAR (pun-intended) before.

Weekend wrap-up (really)

Chalkboard clock

When Derek and I moved in together, he brought with him several items from his old house, few of which fit into our combined decor. One such item was a metallic silver and black wall clock, very '80s looking, that he picked up for free. Instead of tossing it out, we decided to use some leftover chalkboard paint from this project to give it a facelift.

The result is a cool clock facade that we can customize with as many colors and designs as we so please - infinitely re-doable! So in honor of the season, we decorated the clock with Derek and Taylor's 12 Days of Christmas - an idea I borrowed from Young House Love's personalized calendar - making each hour on the clock a special number to us like "2 love birds," "7 years" - how long we've known each other, "11 days of Christmas vacation" and "12 months until next Christmas."

Any ideas on what we should change it to in January? 12 new year's resolutions?

Eggnog French Toast with Rum Syrup

Every Sunday, Derek treats me to a late sleep-in and some relaxation while he fixes us a special breakfast and does all the laundry. Even though I love to cook, it's nice to have a day off and the special care he takes of me is super sweet.

This Sunday, however, we planned to put our routine on hold since I had an early morning flight to NYC for a few days of work and visiting some friends. So when my flight was cancelled due to the winter white-out in the Midwest, I decided to take advantage of the already off-beat day to try out a recipe that had been brewing in my holiday-crazy mind for a few weeks now.

The result was glorious, so much so that Derek didn't even mind I stole his position as Sunday head-chef (though I still let him do the laundry). Enjoy!

Eggnog French Toast with Rum Syrup
Makes 12 pieces

Ingredients:

Toast-
12 slices cinnamon bread
2 eggs
1.5 cups eggnog (we used "vanilla spice" instead of regular - highly recommend)
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice (or use a combo of nutmeg and cinnamon if you don't have this)

Syrup-
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
1 cup powdered (confectioner's) sugar
1 teaspoon rum extract

Directions:

1. Heat a large pan over medium.
2. Crack the eggs into a bowl and whisk with a fork until well-beaten.
3. Add the eggnog and pumpkin pie spice to the eggs and mix until thoroughly combined.
4. One at a time, dip each slice of bread into the eggnog mixture and turn with a fork to coat both sides.
5. Transfer slices to the pan and cook on each side until slightly browned - flipping once.
* Since my pan fits only about 3-4 slices at a time, I keep the finished pieces of toast on a plate in the oven on "Warm" so they don't get cold.

6. Meanwhile, put the butter and milk in a saucepan on medium-low heat and heat, stirring occasionally, until melted.
7. Add in the powered sugar and rum extract and continue to stir until combined.
8. Keep the syrup on "low," stirring occasionally, until you've made all the toast.
9. Plate the toast and drizzle generously with syrup.
10. Stuff yourself until it hurts!

Before you judge my scrawny Christmas tree...

let me give you the full story.

First you need to know that when my sweet boyfriend makes up his mind about something, herds of wild animals can not stop him.

So this year when he decided that we needed to start a tradition of purchasing a live, potted tree, replanting it after the holidays, then recording the location so no matter where we move, we can search our growing tree on Google Maps ... there was no turning back. Not even when we discovered that most potted trees cost upwards of $100, or when we realized we'd only actually be in town two weeks to enjoy our tree.

A live tree was going to make it's way into our tiny apartment, or no tree at all would be allowed through the door.

So to combat the cost issue, and still fill our home with holiday cheer, we settled on this guy. He's alive and kickin' and only cost $15 at Home Depot. And while only about 1/3 of our ornaments could fit on his branches, and they sag under the weight of the tiniest adornment, I love him dearly. First because it's Derek and my first tree together, and second, because it's the start of a sweet tradition that we'll carry on for years to come.

A week or so ago I included this boxing gloves necklace in my giving guide from The Afternoon. I love this kitchy necklace and think it would be a really special gift to let a friend who is going through a difficult time know that she can hang tough.

While hunting around for some more gift ideas, I found two other special pieces of jewelry that can send a message between friends.

OK, so I know this whole week is supposed to be about holiday gifts you can make at home, but Derek and I just completed a little makeover of our tiny apartment bathroom and I had to share.

In my defense, there are two DIY projects in here that you could totally make as gifts, so here it goes...

Since we currently live in an apartment, there isn't too much we can/want to do as far as home upgrades until we actually own a place, so small touches are key to making our rental feel like a home.

We have a huge amount of counter space in the bathroom and wanted to take advantage of it by making it a little nautical and fun.

First up, we swapped out the metal apt-issued towel rack for this awesome wooden shelf I found at an antique store for $15! With the addition of a hand towel, a $1 sailboat from the thrift store, some beach-found shells, and some watery pictures of my Grandpa in the Navy and my Papa fishing, this little area is complete for under 20 bucks.

Below the shelf I put this over sized plastic shell I found at the thrift store for $2. We're going to fill it with matches from all of the cool restaurants we visit for easy candle lighting and a fun memento. I was totally inspired by the clam shell in this post on Young House Love.

Over in the other corner of the counter, we started with a $3 sailboat picture I also found at the thrift store. I then got crafty on two projects that would be super easy for you to create at home!

Since we live in San Diego, finding some shells was literally a day at the beach. I washed them clean in bleach water and picked up this pretty candle and hurricane at Michael's (for less than $10) and used the shell as a filler.

I'm a lotion-o-holic and I like to keep my moisturizer handy but didn't like the look of the bottle on the counter. So with a .50 cent mason jar and a $2.50 roll of jute twine, I crafted a lotion holder that sticks with the nautical look! See below the pictures for the how-to.

Jute Lotion Holder

Materials:
Mason jar
Jute Twine
Super glue and/or spray glue
Drill
Lotion bottle

Directions:
1. Drill a hole in the lid of the jar large enough to fit the entire lotion pump through. Add some super glue to the rim of the pump, push it through the hole and let it set to attach.

2. Starting at the top of the mason jar, put a little dab of super glue and attach the end of the roll of twine. Begin wrapping the twine around the jar, pausing occasional to add some spray or super glue to keep it in place.

3. When you reach the end of the jar, attaching the last bit with super glue and cut off the excess.

4. Fill the jar with lotion and reattach the lid.

5. Voila! Nautical moisturization.

Jute jubilee

I recently completed a project with a roll of jute twine and at just $2.50 for almost a half a pound of jute, I was anxious to see what other projects I could create with my leftovers! Check out some of these ideas for jute projects and check back a bit later today to see what I made!

I love this pretty vase from A Soft Place to Land. What a nice present this would make for your mom or grandma!

This lamp shade project uses a similar idea as the vase. It would be gorgeous in someone's beach cottage!

And I adore this charger from Project Pretty! I could imagine making a few of these and bundling them up as a gift of placemats.

Check out this gorgeous coat rack from Susie Harris! It uses jute ribbon and looks store bought!

Get your gifts in order

Are you an expert organizer? Love to label? Well, if you know a harried mom, swamped student, or any other busy bee on your list, perhaps the best gift you can give him or her is the gift of a little organization. Most of us have a drawer, closet, or pantry that's a wreck that we're always promising we'll get in order, but never have the time. Why not promise someone you'll do it for them? You can buy your organization tools pretty cheaply, and the rest is the gift of your time.

Take for example this awesome pantry makeover from A Little of This, A Little of That. I love how Sarah got her pantry in order and kept it looking cute! Check out her blog for before pictures and info on where to shop for supplies.

Since you can't really place an organized pantry under the Christmas tree, a fun idea might be to frame a picture of the messy "before" space your going to organize. Wrap it up, and then when it's opened reveal the surprise!

Baby it's cold outside...

So why not DIY some adorable winter gear for the folks on your Christmas list this year!

The folks over at Craftzine give a tutorial here on how to turn a sweater into an awesome winter wear handband with just some simple sewing skills! Pick up a few bright cast-off sweaters at your local thrift store and this project is cheap and chic!

And I love this Glamour Girl Glove tutorial from Little Miss Momma. This project is simple, infinitely customizable, and fun for glamour girls of all ages.

Sugar and spice

I know that Martha Stewart has probably told you one too many times what great gifts homemade foods can be, but there are a couple of inventive ideas out there that may have yet to cross your mind.

First up, homemade vanilla extract. Any baker on your list will appreciate such a luxury and may even repay you with some cookies made with it. Check out My Baking Addiction for a recipe and more photos. Bonus points if you make your own bottle label!

For another sweet treat, try whipping up some flavored sugar for the coffee lover you know. Check out the lavender vanilla sugar Joy The Baker whipped up here. As she says, it's the perfect gift along with a bag of yummy coffee beans.

If your recipient is more into salty than sweet, try this recipe for Sweet-and-Spicy Pecans from Derek's mom, Chris! You can also try packaging these in a mason jar or get crafty with some ribbon and stamps on a simple brown lunch bag.

Sweet-and-Spicy Pecans
Makes 1 cup

1/4 cup plus 2 TB sugar
1 cup warm water
1 cup pecan halves
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper

Stir together the 1/4 cup sugar and water until sugar dissolves. Add the pecans and soak for 10 minutes. Drain and discard the liquid. Combine the remaining sugar, chili powder and red pepper in a bowl. Add the pecans and toss to coat. Place the pecans in a single layer on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes or until golden brown, stirring once. Enjoy!

If you're a thrifter like me, every time you're at the your local Goodwill or Salvation Army you see tons of vintage tins for pocket change! These tins are super cute for holding household items but with a little ingenuity, you can also turn them into some fabulous DIY gifts.

A holiday secret

Welcome to week one of my 25 Days of Giving! Each week I'll be sharing my favorite gift-shopping tips and posting guides for your own holiday shopping!

This week I'm going to pull together guides from some of my favorite secret weapon stores.

No matter how spread across the country your friends and family are, most of them will have, and are familiar with, all the generic "mall" stores you can find in any city in the country. Sure, these stores can be great for gift shopping if you know your recipient has a particular favorite, but you also want to keep in mind that when you buy a gift from a more common store, your recipient may have already seen, or even have, what you purchase.

This is why I love having secret weapon stores - shops that are either only in my city, or online stores that are less well-known. At these places you can purchase a more unique gift that your recipient may have never seen before! These gifts always surprise, delight, and make for conversation for years to come!

Derek and I are off to Minneapolis tomorrow to start the Thanksgiving holiday. I can't help but stress a little every time I travel. And though I'm entirely grateful for all the work the airports, airlines, and everyone else involved does to keep us safe, I can't help but wish flying was a bit like it was years ago ... when travelers wore their Sunday best to fly and being a flight attendant was glamorous work.

One of my favorite holiday traditions is the advent calendar. Every year, my dad fills a little cupboard style advent with little treats for each day in December for my sister and I - candy, cleverly folder dollar bills, and even bits of jewelry from Forever 21 (yes! all sourced out by Dad himself)!

It's always so much fun to see what surprise is in store, so to share that joy with my readers, I'm announcing my own 25 Days of Giving! Writing in circles

Inspired by this charming post from Living With Lindsay I set out to make a wreath of book pages akin to the adorable one Lindsay crafted for her home, below.

Lindsay used paint to age the pages she tore from a dollar store romance novel. I set out to do the same, but realized I didn't have the proper colors of paint. What I did have however, was a Cosmopolitan magazine from the 1940s - already aged and with a pretty, newspapery feel. Now before you gasp at the horror of me ripping through a vintage Cosmo, please note that it was already beyond salvaging and I originally purchased it for less than $10 to create some wall art with the intact pages (post on that to come).

So, armed with my ripped apart magazine, and a whole lot of patience, I created the below beauty for our front door (please disregard ugly door color - apartment living does not lend itself to the most aesthetically appealing paint jobs).

I'm so happy with the unique, vintagey result and though I'll be changing it out soon for a Christmas wreath, I plan to hang this baby most of the year round.

Should you want to create a wreath of your own, Lindsey's post has a great video to help you out! Here is the method to my own madness:

Tools
1-2 books or 1 magazine (depends on the size of the wreath)
Wreath base (I used straw but Styrofoam would work well)
Hot glue gun
Pencil
Ribbon

Instructions
1. Begin by taking out all the pages and rolling them up as you see fit! I rolled mine in various ways, folded some in half, ripped others in half, etc. Get creative!
2. Flip the wreath to the side that will be the back. Begin by making a ring around the back side of rolled-up paper so that when you flip it back over, you will see the rolls sticking out the bottom.
3. Begin working around your wreath, folding a tiny bit of the bottom of each roll to attach the glue to. Glue pieces in random order (creativity!) using the pencil to push each down so you don't burn your fingers.
4. Continue doing this until your wreath is full.
5. Tie a ribbon into a bow around the top or finish it off with any other creative decoration!
6. Use a wreath hanger to hang.
